The history of human society is marked by continuous struggle and triumph over various crises. Human beings have survived major pandemics — from the Black Death in 14th century, to the novel coronavirus in 2019 (COVID-19); they have recovered from economic and social crises — from the Great Depression of 1929, to the global financial crisis in 2008; they have rebuilt their homes upon the ruins of war — from Spartan-waged battles of Ancient Greece, to the two World Wars. Such crises are like ghosts, haunting the road of human development, inflicting unbearable pains upon humankind. Every effort made to subdue a crisis adds an episode to the history of human struggle. These trials are odes to the vitality, perseverance, and sustainability of humanity; they leave indelible imprints on the annals of human history.

In 2019, a totally unexpected COVID-19 pandemic swept across the globe, shaking all of its 200-plus countries and regions. Consequently, hundreds of millions of people suffered consequences, the world economy was plunged into a disastrous recession, and international governance devolved into chaos. In fact, the COVID-19 pandemic has sounded an alarm to all people: the earth and its populations exist in an era of crises, wherein current and future generations will only face increasingly frequent and severe calamities. Looking back on major events that have scarred us in the past, it should be admitted that humans are precisely the culprits for a significant number of them. Yet many remain unaware. In pursuit of economic growth and social prosperity, humans have neglected sustainability, greedily exploiting and contending for natural resources. The consequences include a heavily battered earth, a rapidly warming climate, a massive spread of poverty, and a frail economic system — together putting the survival and development of humankind in grave danger.

The climate and environment crisis is a “gray rhino” charging right at us. The past five years have seen the highest global mean temperature on record. Cumulatively, humankind has emitted as much as 2200 GtCO2 since the start of the Industrial Revolution. What’s worse, the extreme temperatures, frequent typhoons, and rampant flooding and droughts now being suffered — these are no more than “the eve of the storm”. Climate change is actually accelerating the formation of a global ecological and environment crisis that will almost certainly trigger a disastrous domino effect, dealing a devastating blow to both humankind and Earth. The international community has issued a stern warning that the unfolding global environment crisis is approaching a point of no return. Faced with the deadliest of crises on a global scale, how then will humanity respond? How will they write this chapter of history?

The climate and environment crisis is closely related to energy. Energy is the lifeblood of economic and social development connecting human activities and global ecology. However, the combustion and overuse of fossil fuels is also the perpetrator of all our current crises. To escape our seemingly sealed fate and open a door to hope, human beings must hold hard to the key of clean development. Vigorously advancing clean replacement and electricity replacement, accelerating the complete replacement of coal, oil, and natural gas with clean energies like wind power, solar power and hydropower, boosting electrification, creating a clean, efficient, and modern low-carbon energy system — this is the humanity’s solution, its hope to pull through this crisis as a community with a shared destiny. Ending our reliance on fossil fuels will allow humankind to realize a global village with blue skies, green lands, clean waters, and harmonious relations.

Global Energy Interconnection (GEI) is a global platform for clean development. As a smart, user-friendly, and modern low-carbon energy network with global coverage and near-instant transmission, it can efficiently develop and distribute high-quality, and affordable clean energy to households anywhere in the world — all at a fast pace. As the world increasingly moves away from fossil fuels, GEI will come to replace the coal, oil, and natural gas systems in their entirety. It is the future’s global energy system. As a practicable, economical, efficient, sophisticated, and win-win solution to the current state of global emergency, GEI offers humans a “panacea” to turn crisis into opportunity. History will go to show, this is not the end, but a new chapter: GEI will play a crucial role in the continued history of human energy use, and a human community will join together to defeat crisis and share in a greater destiny.

This report is divided into nine chapters. Chapter 1 reviews major crises that have ever descended upon humankind and reflects upon the tragic lessons learned in response. Chapter 2 reveals how humanity has entered an era of frequent crises, facing more significant global-scale disturbances intertwining disasters of climate and environment, resources and energy, poverty and health. Chapter 3 illustrates humanity’s dire need to value, attend to, and prevent the fast-approaching deadly climate and environment crisis according to scientific facts, the consequences of loss, and development trends. Chapter 4 examines the underlying dilemmas of thought, activity, development models, and governance systems standing in the way of global crisis defeat. Chapter 5 proposes clean energy development and “two replacements” as a way to crack the crisis. Chapter 6 introduces GEI as a systematic crisis solution. Chapter 7 analyzes GEI’s advantages and applicability in terms of feasibility, technical economy, development methods, and global cooperation. Chapter 8 introduces ideas and focal points for the practical foundation, effective development, and future of GEI construction across six continents. Chapter 9 elucidates GEI’s immense value toward mitigating the climate and environment crisis, protecting the earth, realizing sustainable development and improving human health and well-being, then looks into the bright prospects for humanity to embrace a sustainable world featuring a high level of clean development, electrification, intelligentization and humanization.

Humankind is a community with a shared future, and no country can stand alone to address all the challenges faced by human beings. Solidarity, cooperation, support, and mutually beneficial development are the strongest weapons we have against crises. Let’s take on this mission together, pursuing development for the whole of humankind and declaring war on upcoming crises hand in hand. We must take the fate of humanity and of Earth into our own hands, and quickly join together in building GEI and the community with a shared future for mankind. May the light of green development, harmony, and sustainability shine over the whole world!
