On July 3, 2019 (local time), President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré of Burkina Faso held talks with Chairman Liu Zhenya of Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO) in Ouagadougou, Capital of Burkina Faso. The two sides exchanged in-depth views and reached important consensus on building African Energy Interconnection to boost the development of energy and electricity in Burkina Faso.
Liu Zhenya said that in response to the major challenges facing sustainable development of mankind, Global Energy Interconnection (GEI), a comprehensive energy system that integrates clean energy development, power grid interconnection, energy efficiency improvement and other measures, provides a quantifiable, replicable and scalable systematic solution in both technical and economical respectives. He briefed the President on the strategic thinking and relevant research results of building African Energy Interconnection, accelerating the development of hydropower in the lower reaches of the Congo River, and realizing the co-development of "electricity, mining, metallurgy, manufacturing and trade". He also suggested that, in light of its resource endowment, Burkina Faso should attach equal importance to the development of domestic clean energy and the introduction of external electricity, and receive hydropower from the lower reaches of the Congo River and other areas to realize mutual support with domestic clean power generation such as solar energy, in an effort to fundamentally address power shortage and meet the power demands for economic growth and social development.
President Kaboré noted that Burkina Faso is currently plagued by power shortage and is willing to support and assist in promoting hydropower development in the lower reaches of the Congo River and strengthening cross-border power grid connectivity, hoping that the action plan brought by GEIDCO can help Burkina Faso solve problems related to energy and electricity and promote industrial and agricultural development. He also expressed the willingness to join the African Energy Interconnection Sustainable Development Alliance (AEISDA) and work with African countries to achieve the goals of the AUAgenda 2063 and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
During the visit to Burkina Faso, Liu Zhenya and his delegation also held talks with Niouga Ambroise Ouedraogo, Energy Minister of Burkina Faso, and Abdallah Boureima, President of Union Economique et Monétaire OuestAfricaine (UEMOA) Commission, with positive results. Ouédraogo noted that China's UHV transmission technology is the golden key to solve energy dilemma and promote energy revolution, making it possible to transmit electricity between different countries. It is an important inspiration for Burkina Faso to explore the potential of electricity and reduce power cost. Boureima stressed that he looks forward to strengthening practical cooperation with GEIDCO to jointly promote the development of clean energy in relevant African countries and strive for the early implementation of the project.
In September 2018, GEIDCO and the government of the Republic of Guinea jointly proposed the establishment of AEISDA during the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), with an aim to establish multilateral mechanism and build important platforms to promote clean, industrialized, electrified and integrated development of Africa.
