Mongolian President Khaltmaa Battulga Pays a Visit to GEIDCO and Holds Talks with Liu Zhenya

On April 26, Liu Zhenya, Chairman of Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO) held talks with Mongolian President Khaltmaa Battulga during his visit to Beijing. Both sides remarked that they will jointly promote Northeast Asia Energy Interconnection and advance pragmatic cooperation on clean energy development and key projects to inject vital dynamics into the sustainable development of regional economy.

Liu Zhenya pointed out that, on September 26, 2015, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed discussions on establishing Global Energy Interconnection (or GEI) at the UN Sustainable Development Summit. On May 14, 2017, President Xi reiterated the need to develop GEI and achieve green and low-carbon development at the first Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (BRF), which was highly acknowledged and actively respondedby the international community. Mongolia is endowed with abundant energy and mineral resources. The essential approach to transforming resource advantages into economic advantages of the country is to develop its coal and clean energy resources and transmit power in bundle to China, South Korea, Japan and other load areas, while satisfying domestic demand, which will drive the sustainable development of Mongolia’s economy. Deepening China-Mongolia bilateral cooperation in the energy sector on the platform of Northeast Asia Energy Interconnection will secure remarkable achievements.

Battulga said that, in order to strengthen regional collaboration in Northeast Asia and expand economic and trade cooperation, Mongolia proposes to push forward Northeast Asian grid interconnection and develop cross-border interconnection projects, including China-Mongolia-Russia interconnection projects. Home to rich clean energy, including solar and wind energy, Mongolia will generate enormous economic benefits and promote the sharing of development benefits within the region by vigorously developing clean power and delivering it to China, Japan and South Korea. Mongolia is working closely with relevant international organizations and banks on project planning and implementation. Battulga also noted that, GEIDCO has conducted high-quality planning and research on Northeast Asian and Mongolian Energy Interconnection. He expects both sides to join hands in clean energy, advanced technology and project implementation on the basis of mutual benefits and win-win development, in a bid to kick off interconnection projects as soon as possible.
