At local time on March 21, Mr. Liu Zhenya, Chairman of GEIDCO and Chairman of CEC attended the IEEE PES Generation, Transmission and Distribution Grand International Conference & Exposition Asia (GTD Asia 2019) in Bangkok, Thailand and delivered a keynote speech theming on China’s electric power transition and Global Energy Interconnection (GEI) at the opening ceremony.
Liu Zhenya noted that, since we entered the new century, China has secured remarkable achievement in electric power transition, providing strong guarantees for China’s economic and social development, and offering valuable experience and reference case to the world’s energy revolution and transition. China has attained all-round breakthroughs in ultra-high voltage (UHV) power transmission technology and built the world’s largest UHV AC and DC hybrid power grid, significantly enhancing allocation capacity and operation efficiency of power grids. The installed clean power generation capacity of hydro, wind and solar energy has reached 350 GW, 180 GW and 170 GW respectively, all ranking first worldwide. The proportion of electric energy in final energy consumption has increased from 11% at the turn of the century to 25%. An aggregated investment of more than USD 80 billion has been implemented in more than 70 countries worldwide, which has comprehensively strengthened international cooperation in energy and power industries.
Liu Zhenya pointed out that clean development is the core of sustainable development. Technological innovation and green and low-carbon energy transition are the only way to achieve sustainable development of mankind. The construction of GEI will expedite the implementation of the “Two Replacements, One Increase and One Restore”. At the same time, it will fundamentally break constraints on energy resources and environment, thus realizing green and low-carbon development. He went on saying that the conditions for building GEI are met and we just need to seize the opportunity and accelerate the progress.
Liu Zhenya proposed that, in the future, we will focus on improving the power generation efficiency and economy of clean energy, intercontinental transmission scale and safe operation, reliability and intelligent level of large grids, accelerate research and development of technical equipment, including clean power generation, VSC-HVDC power transmission, large-capacity submarine cables, large-capacity energy storage, new-generation grid technology, and construction of global electricity market mechanisms, in order to safeguard the innovative development of GEI.
As a world-renowned energy and power conference, the IEEE T&D Conference has a history of almost 40 years. With the theme of “Big Shift in Power and Energy”, this year’s GTD Asia enables in-depth discussions on the opportunities and challenges of energy and power development and brings together power engineers, senior executives and managers worldwide to jointly chart the course for future innovation in power generation, transmission and allocation technology and steer a sustainable development path of energy and power industries.
During his visit in Thailand, Liu Zhenya held talks with Ms. Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, United Nations Deputy Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP); H.E. Mr. Siri Jirapongphan, Thailand’s Minister of Energy and Mr. Viboon Rerksirithai, Governor of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT). Liu Zhenya briefed them on the fundamental principles of GEI and GEIDCO’s recent work progress, with a special focus on the development guidelines of Energy Interconnection in Thailand and ASEAN, which was positively received by all parties concerned. Ms. Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana said that energy plays a pivotal role in achieving the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the building of GEI is all-encompassing, covering all key parts such as energy production, transmission and supply and hence is of paramount importance to global economic and social development. She expressed wishes to deepen pragmatic cooperation with GEIDCO, advance the coordinated development of GEI and the energy and power development planning of Asia-Pacific countries and help governments of these countries realize their renewable energy development goals. H.E. Mr. Siri Jirapongphan observed that GEI is an insightful and forward-looking initiative. The idea of leveraging differences of time zones, seasons, various resources and electricity prices to realize optimal allocation of clean energy greatly inspires the energy development of Thailand and Southeast Asia, and it will help expand cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative from trade to energy and power sectors. He also said that he hopes to maintain close communication with GEIDCO to jointly conduct research on planning and mechanism development and push forward the innovative development of Energy Interconnection in ASEAN and GEI at large. Mr. Viboon Rerksirithai said that GEI is an ambitious initiative and a key enabler in realizing sustainable development. He also expressed wishes to continuously strengthen communication and deepen cooperation with GEIDCO.
