UNFCCC Executive Secretary Visited GEIDCO Headquarters

On May 22, H.E. Ms. Patricia Espinosa, UNFCCC Executive Secretary, visited Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO) headquarters. The two sides had in-depth exchanges around Global Energy Interconnection (GEI) and climate change with important consensus reached.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Secretariat is a permanent UN agency that supports the implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which was adopted at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on June 4, 1992. It is the first global convention that aims to comprehensively control emissions of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and combat the adverse impact of global warming on human economy and society.

At the symposium, H.E. Ms. Patricia spoke highly of GEI, a China’s initiative, and the work that GEIDCO had been taking on since its establishment. H.E. commented that building GEI was an ambitious vision and a world-leading development idea, which would be of great significance to the development of human society and strong testimony to China’s consistent role as a global leader. The interconnection of power grid is not only a commercial act, but also an important measure and action that concerns human survival and our daily lives, as it plays a significant role in improving living environment and quality of life. GEIDCO is a global leader not only in technology and data, but also in concept development and strategic planning. The global grid interconnection vision and the “three-step” path that GEIDCO has put forward are great contributions to the development of human society. It is hoped that the two sides will continue to deepen cooperation in jointly conducting research, organizing events, and strengthening communication.

GEIDCO introduced its work in addressing climate change and put forward suggestions on how to better promote GEI for the implementation of the Paris Agreement through cooperation with UNFCCC Secretariat, which was appreciated by H.E. Ms. Patricia. The two sides also had in-depth discussions on cooperation approaches and exchanges of visits and hoped to build stronger partnerships.

Building GEI is a fundamental solution to climate change. By accelerating “clean replacement” and “electric replacement”, promoting trans-national and intercontinental grid interconnection, and driving the green transformation of energy, we can stop relying on coal, oil, gas and other carbon-based energy sources, effectively control global carbon emissions, and build connections with mitigation, adaptation, finance, technology transfer, and capacity building and other topics in the Paris Agreement, so as to systemically address climate change.

After the symposium, H.E. Ms. Patricia was interviewed by China News Service, Russia Today and several other domestic and foreign media on the main achievements of the first-round climate negotiations in 2018, the latest progress of implementing the Paris Agreement and climate change issues such as China’s contributions to the multilateral process and global actions on tackling climate change.

On the same day, H.E. Ms. Patricia and her delegation also visited the GEI Exhibition Hall and Operation Analysis Center with great interest and high appreciation.
