From 27th to 29th March, Liu Zhenya (Chairman of Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO), Chairman of China Electricity Council and Member of Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences) held talks with Oleg Budargin (Vice Chairman of GEIDCO, former CEO of Director General of PJSC ROSSETI and Member of the Supreme Council of United Russia), James A. Jefferies (President and CEO of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE)), Shaikh Nawaf Al Khalifa (Chairman of the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA)), Ahmed Ali Saeed Ibrahim(CEO of GCCIA), Zhu Juwang (Director of UNDESA’s Division for Sustainable Development and Special Representative of UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Liu Zhenmin), Gaber Desouki Mostafa (President of Egyptian Electricity Holding Company) and other important guests attending the 2018 Global Energy Interconnection Conference. They had in-depth exchanges and discussions, and reached important consensus on global energy transition, clean energy development, grid connectivity, electricity market and other topics.
The delegates spoke highly of the Global Energy Interconnection initiative and believed it provided the fundamental solution for China to tackle climate change. It will make important contributions to global energy transition and sustainable development. The guests said they would actively support and promote Global Energy Interconnection development and give full play to the tremendous benefits brought by time difference, seasonal difference and electricity price difference. Efforts will be made to enlarge the scale of energy and electricity trade and promote highly efficient development and utilization of global clean energy to inject strong momentum to world economic development.
Budargin said that Russia stretches across Eurasia and possesses great potentials in implementing Global Energy Interconnection initiative and realizing energy interconnectivity across Eurasia. We need to further advocate the concept of GEI, speed up energy transformation and promote regional integrated development of energy.
Jefferies said that the development and progress in electric power technologies have changed the world. He also expressed his willingness to maintain close cooperation with GEIDCO, make joint efforts to introduce the great idea of Global Energy Interconnection to power engineers across the globe and promote the implementation of such a strategy in the world.
Khalifa believed that electricity trade will become the most indispensable and important component of energy trade in the future. Grid connectivity between the 6 Gulf countries and the rest of the world will realize cross-seasonal complementation of different energy resources and lower the cost of power supply. He hoped that Middle East will become an electricity trading hub connecting Europe, Asia and Africa.
Zhu Juwang said that creating the Global Energy Interconnection is the “golden key” to tackle problems related to climate change, energy and power. It has gained high recognition and active support from the international society which will further advance the 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, including Goal 7 on“Ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all”.
Gaber said that Egypt is rich in clean energy resources, such as solar and wind power, and has sped up upgrading and transformation of backbone grids and distribution grids to meet the demand of energy connectivity. It is hoped to carry out pragmatic cooperation with GEIDCO in terms of renewable energy integration to the grid, cross-border connectivity projects and other topics to further promote Global Energy Interconnection from an international consensus to a common action.
On the sidelines of 2018 Global Energy Interconnection Conference, Liang Xuming (CTO of GEIDCO) and Cheng Zhiqiang (Deputy Secretary-General of GEIDCO) met respectively with Nicholas Dunlop (Secretary-General of Climate Parliament), Rob Stephen (President of International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE)), Datuk Amar Abdul Hamed Sepawi (President of Board of Directors, Malaysia Sarawak Energy), Georg Kell (Founding Director of the United Nations Global Compact), Jose Medardo Cadena (Director of Integration, Latin-American Energy Organization (OLADE)), Urban Rusnák (Secretary General of International Energy Charter), Gary Lewis (Director of Programme and Policy Division, United Nations Environment Programme), Gwen Ruta (Executive Vice President of the US Environmental Defense Fund) and Tesfaye Boncha (Office Director of Minister of Water, Irrigation and Electricity, Ethiopia).
Dunlop said that since its commencement, GEIDCO has achieved tremendous progress. He hoped that GEIDCO can accomplish more in clean energy, grid interconnection, financing and other research areas to provide strategic and technological support to energy related policy makers in each country. Stephen said that numerous working groups in CIGRE are working on large electric system planning, key technologies of undersea grids, solutions for people without access to electricity and other research areas related to Global Energy Interconnection. He also expressed his willingness to collaborate with the Organization to achieve an accelerated development of Global Energy Interconnection. Hamed Sepawi said that Sarawak in Malaysia has successfully connected with West Kalimatan in Indonesia. It is hoped to deepen the cooperation with GEIDCO in terms of cross-border energy development and grid connectivity. Kell highly agrees with the idea to develop Global Energy Interconnection, and is willing to make contributions to advocating Global Energy Interconnection in a broader and deeper aspect. Cadena hopes to collaborate with the Organization to carry out joint research, strengthen the judgement on situations related to politics and economy, laws and regulations and energy connectivity in Latin America to find the best practices. Rusnák said that Global Energy Interconnection Conference is impressing. Since its establishment, GEIDCO has made a series of important achievements in concept popularization, international exchanges and strategic and planning research among other areas, which promises a bright future for Global Energy Interconnection. Lewis said that GEI provides solutions to tackle climate change for the benefit of latter generations, and that it will play an active role in implementing the UN’s environmental protection strategies. Ruta said that the concept of Global Energy Interconnection goes in line with the purposes and principles of Environmental Defense Fund. It is hoped to work with GEIDCO for the establishment of the Global Energy Interconnection in North America. Boncha is expecting to strengthen the cooperation with the Organization in promoting the idea of Global Energy Interconnection, implementing regional grid connectivity and carrying out technological exchanges and research among other areas.
