Themed by "the road of energy in the future - from the current electric power system towards Global Energy Interconnection", the 2016 Beijing Conference of Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership (GSEP) was held from June 2 to June 3. Liu Zhenya, Chairman of Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO) and Chairman of China Electricity Council (CEC), together with Shamshad Akhtar, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, attended the conference and delivered speeches. Shu Yinbiao, Vice Chairman of GEIDCO and Chairman of State Grid Cooperation of China (SGCC) chaired the conference and made a greeting speech. Others who attended the conference include Oleg Budargin, Director General of PJSC ROSSETI, James Shannon, elected Chairman of International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)， Yang Kun, Executive Vice President of China Electricity Council, and Yang Qing, Executive Vice President of SGCC.
Liu Zhenya made a keynote speech with the theme of "constructing Global Energy Interconnection and meeting the global power demand with clean and green alternatives". He said in the speech that the demand for energy continues to grow with the development of the world economy and population. Large scale development and utilization of fossil energy has led to lack of resources, environment pollution and climate change. The fundamental way to deal with the challenge is to speed up the development of clean energy and improve "two alternatives", and the key is to develop and utilize clean energy in a large scale. It is the development trend of world energy that we must build a security system for global energy with electricity as the center and power grid as the platform to meet the global power demand with clean and green alternatives. The essence of Global Energy Interconnection is "smart grid + ultra-high voltage grid + clean energy", which is the necessary way for the development of clean energy. GEIDCO, as he said, is willing to hold the principle of mutual benefit and win-win to strengthen communication and cooperation with GSEP and other related institutes, gather consensuses of development, promote interconnection, push forward demonstration projects, enhance communication and cooperation, jointly promote the innovative development of Global Energy Interconnection, and make positive contributions to the sustainable development of world energy and electricity.
Shu Yinbiao pointed out in his greeting speech that world electricity is in a sustained rapid growth with the development of economy and society. The modern society has fully entered the era of electrification, and power grid has become an energy combination of development, transmission, configuration and utilization, whose position and role is in increasingly prominent in the development of global energy. GSEP is a key power to promote the development of global energy in a green, low carbon, high efficient and sustainable way. This conference has important practical significance and long-term strategic value on promoting the coordinated development of electricity, economy, society and environment.
During the conference, Wang Yimin, Secretary General of GEIDCO and Assistant of President of SGCC, was invited to introduce the distribution of clean energy around the world. Besides, he analyzed the demand of global electricity as well as transnational and transcontinental power transmission. He mainly stated the "three steps" strategy of domestic interconnection, intracontinental interconnection and transcontinental interconnection of Global Energy Interconnection. He also exchanged views on technical standards and economic benefits of Global Energy Interconnection with representatives.
GSEP is a non-profit international organization, constituted by 12 international power companies including the American Electric Power Company, SGCC, Electricite DE France, ELETROBRAS and others. GSEP aims at coping with the global electricity issues and promoting the sustainable development of global energy. Leaders of members in GSEP and corresponding representatives were invited to attend the conference. They exchanged views on new achievements of the development of electric power and carried out discussions on the development of electric power in the future. Representatives from Edison Electric Institute (EEI), EURELECTRIC, ENEL and some other enterprises also attended the conference.
