On June 2, Liu Zhenya, chairman of Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO), met with Shamshad Akhtar, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, and the delegation she led. Liu and Akhtar exchanged views and reached a consensus on deepening practical cooperation and pushing forward the interconnection of power grids in Asia. Both sides expressed that they would strengthen cooperation on international projects, technical exchanges and other fields to push forward the construction of Global Energy Interconnection and make contributions to the sustainable development of human society.
Akhtar congratulated on the achievement of GEIDCO in promoting the construction of Global Energy Interconnection. She said that Global Energy Interconnection is a project beneficial to all mankind and participants would benefit a lot in technical innovation, engineering construction and financing investment. In addition, she said that the United Nations is always committed to solving the sustainability issue of energy development and APEC members already had discussions on energy interconnection of the Asia-Pacific region. She hoped that GEIDCO would enhance cooperation with the United Nations to find practicable projects and jointly promote energy interconnection of the Asia-Pacific region in the strategic framework of “the Belt and Road Initiatives”. Finally, she pointed out that the United Nations would gather strength, innovate ways of cooperation, promote the construction of Global Energy Interconnection as an international consensus of a wider range, and jointly push forward the development of energy interconnection with GEIDCO and State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC).
Liu Zhenya thanked Akhtar for her support on Global Energy Interconnection. He said that GEIDCO is committed to pushing forward the construction of Global Energy Interconnection to meet the global power demand with clean and green alternatives. In addition, Liu also said that GEIDCO would enhance research on strategy, technology, engineering investment and other fields, deepen international cooperation and establish research think tank to make contributions to energy transformation, environment protection, coping with climate change and promoting economy. From the point of his view, an initial consensus has already been reached for the construction of Global Energy Interconnection and the construction work has already been in the phase of strategic implementation, and meanwhile, the strategy of “the Belt and Road Initiative” brings significant opportunities to international energy interconnection. Liu Zhenya hoped that the United Nations and its Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) would exert influence to guide governments of related countries to enhance mutual trust and gather consensuses. Finally he pointed out that GEIDCO expects to deepen cooperation with the United Nations to jointly promote the implementation of the demonstration project of power grid interconnection in Asia and push forward the innovative development of Global Energy Interconnection.
Before the meeting, Akhtar and the delegation she led visited the exhibition center of Global Energy Interconnection and National Power Dispatching and Control Center of SGCC. Others who attended the meeting include Wang Yimin, Secretary General of GEIDCO, Assistant of President of SGCC and Director of Global Energy Interconnection Office of SGCC, Zhu Guangchao, Assistant Chief Engineer of SGCC and Director of Department of International Cooperation of SGCC, and heads of related departments of ESCAP, GEIDCO and SGCC.
